Ravi Shankar Bhel Poori House [Old London]

Serving vegetarian Indian food on the same spot, and alleged with the same green coloured frontage, since 1982, Ravi Shankar Bhel Poori House certainly qualifies as Old London. One of a cluster of long-established restaurants on Drummond Street serving South Ian food for decades, it has survived economic gloom, pandemic, and the disruption of the HS2 rebuild of nearby Euston station.

Its menu is short, but offers excellent value. The daily specials are always worth considering, but otherwise you will not go far wrong with a thali set meal and some panni poori. Unlike other places offering this cuisine, it serves alcohol for those who indulge. It’s close enough to University College, and its associated hospital, for eavesdropping on academic and medical gossip from nearby tables, and just round the corner from Speedy’s cafe, as featured in the BBC Sherlock series.
